Streaming Kingmaker 17!

Hey guys, we're streaming Kingmaker episode 17 this friday evening (right now!).  Come join us by clicking the livestream button at the top of the page.

The Big Sleep

It has been a few days since our last session of Kingmaker and I have been lax in remarking on a most remarkable event that occurred during the game. One of the PCs, Yurris met his end at the hands of a vicious troll. Character death is an RPG topic that has been done to death. Teehee. But, I still wanted to bring up a few of my thoughts on it.

First of all, our groups reaction to this death was very peculiar. We all laughed. Yurris wasn't unpopular in the group or among the players, and I'm sure that if Ebo, the player, had been asked if he wanted Yurris to die the answer would have been no. He took it in stride though, and laughed. Mostly, I suspect because his character had a run-in with a troll early on, when the characters still felt very invincible. He had made jokes when the foul beasties came up again that he hoped he didn't get killed and behold, one turn full HP, the next, negative fourteen.

I for one am glad that things turned out the way that they did. Sorry, Yurris's ghost. I didn't mean it like that. It was beyond obvious that the party was going into a dangerous locale at the end of the prior session. I did all of the prep I could to make sure everything would go exactly by the book. I swore to myself that I would not fudge any rolls. I was considering making a short speech reminding the players that there is not resurrection in this campaign and the reiterate what they know about the dangerous monsters they were about to face, but I thought better of it. It would have been worse to give them meta-game warnings about things they already new than to let them test the waters. I trusted them not to be stupid.

When the worst did happen, a series of damage rolls that vaulted neatly over the dying area straight into dead, the players took it in stride and the PCs were galvanized  to get justice for their friend. The tragedy ultimately makes the story more personal.

I look forward to meeting Ebo's new character and I am very psyched for my next session!

Maps, Maps, Maps (and other stuff, too)

I've lost this post twice now, and because I'm a huge idiot, here I am writing it a third time, because I can't possibly remember to save it. I've accumulated a small but substantial collection of things I'd like to share today, one thanks to Facebook, one because of reddit, and one that I hadn't considered sharing but seems like a good idea since I spend time there pretty regularly.

Geek and Sundry
This is a super site! It's still a work in progress, but it will be an awesome collection of shows on the interwebs. The Guild is the one we are all familiar with, and while not usually directly RPG related it is supremely geeky. Wil Wheaton's offering has me super jazzed, where he collects cool people together and does tremendously nerdy things with them. Like Dinner for Five, but with D&D. I'm not kidding when I say that I subscribed to this everywhere, even the tweeters.

RPGLife.com's Maps
What a delightful resource for the online roleplayer, or the offline roleplayer with too much printer ink. This is a collection of user uploaded maps for a huge number of situations. I personally love the buildings, boats, and outdoor maps, since they are mostly non-specific. I'll be yoinking these maps and dumping them into our google hangouts I'm almost sure of it. I hate drawing boats! Thanks Reddit for hooking me up with this, you are such a pal.

RPG.net's Actual Play Forum
I know, RPG.net is tremendously popular, and the actual play forum probably gets a lot of read, but this is for people who haven't yet been there or passed it over. The forum is for people to recount the adventures they have in an episodic format via forum post. I visit mostly because I like getting a feel for the way a setting or system flows. I like knowing how other people play in the same systems I do. The stories are neat too, and that helps. Special mention reserved for DaveB's actual play threads, for telling incredibly detailed and awesome stories.

Hello,

I will be kicking off the first session of Days of Reckoning, a story arc in the Mystic Realms.  This arc follows Evander, the human paladin working with the Triad church.  The session will likely start with some last minute character creation and any other questions people have (also general purpose goofing off).  Then, we will move into some hard core role play action.  Tune in!

Time: Saturday (March 17) 2pm PST

Hey everyone.  We will be live-streaming Lee's pathfinder game at 4pm PST today!  This high-magic game is wild, bizarre, and a crap-ton of fun.

Ed will be joining us this time on his royal cavalier, so perhaps my princess's purity, as well as hit points, may be protected this session. (Don't count on the latter!)  Either way, lightning bolts all around.

Tune in, it'll be fun.

A New Look

Hey everyone!

Our website has a new look as of today!  We have migrated to an entirely different system, so unfortunately, if you had a user account on HouseRule previously, you will need to re-register.  Don't fret though, as it is fast and easy.

The forums we had before were plagued with weeds, so that section is down while we prepare the new forums.  Please feel free to comment on the blog posts though, we'd love to hear from you!

To anybody who has paid our little blog (or podcast) any attention it should be no surprise that I've been following the RPG Superstar contest that Paizo is running. It actually drew my attention one week after entries could be submitted, which made me all kinds of sadface, however it has proved to be entertaining to read all the submissions by the top 32! I love me a good magic item and the round one entries did not disappoint! I might yoink a few of them for my own nefarious purposes, or just borrow some of the concepts for the wacky items I make up.

But as much as I love reading the submissions, I love reading the commentary even more. It gives keen insight into not only the selection process, but also the way professional game devs think about things. I highly recommend browsing the list of entries for things that grab your attention (or browsing all of them, they are all interesting) and then reading what the devs have to say about them. It'll be getting even better in the near future as the competition heats up and we get to the really awesome stuff like monsters and eventually and entire module!
